COMMUNITY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS (Oct. 17)

The Government of Alberta, in collaboration with Volunteer Alberta, is excited to introduce the Serving Communities Internship Program. SCiP aims to simultaneously build stronger communities and stronger leaders in Alberta by engaging post-secondary students in the nonprofit/voluntary sector.

Through internships across the province, post-secondary students are provided with important opportunities to develop their specialized skills, gain meaningful work experience, and advance their understanding of the nonprofit/voluntary sector.

Thanks to SCIP, Alberta’s communities, both urban and rural, will directly benefit from the expanding capacity of nonprofit/voluntary organization.

In the first year alone, up to 500 internship opportunities will be created for Alberta post-secondary students in the nonprofit/voluntary sector.

Students will be involved in an initiative or program at their respective organizations, and will work together with the organization to develop goals and expectations for the internship. The internships are meant to be complementary to, not to replace, the student’s course load. Upon completion of the internship, when all the agreed upon goals have been met, the student will receive a $1000 bursary from Alberta Advanced Education and Technology.

This is a program that would be of interest to many of our students that volunteer in the community. If you look at the examples of volunteer commitments, they are exactly the type of projects that our students are able to complete:

Create marketing plans, key messages, and information/awareness pieces; Involvement in volunteer management activities; Planning and implementing advocacy activities, speakers series, resources, support groups; Designing and developing promotional and marketing materials, social media activities, or websites; Create project plans, or program evaluation planning; or Research using focus groups, interviews with stakeholders and stakeholder groups.
